New Member Orientation for

NJ Taps (www.njtaps.com)

 Dress

If you are a current/former member of the military, fire, police or Veteran Service organization, then you may wear your dress uniform.  Otherwise, civilians are expected to wear a dark suit.  Please select a conservative tie.  (i.e. Avoid ties with complex patterns or bright colors)

Sounding TAPS

TAPS must be played properly.  The area that is often played incorrectly is between notes 7-15.  These are straight 8th notes.  A mentor is available if you want one

Honorariums

While it is acceptable to receive an honorarium, it is NEVER acceptable to make your participation contingent on any payment.

Decorum

Arrive at Cemetery, or service site, no less than 30 minutes prior to the interment, service, or ceremony.  Find your contact and report to the person coordinating the Military Funeral Detail or event.  Verify and follow all instructions (i.e. where to stand, cue to begin playing, when to leave the field)

Military Outreach

The task of communicating with the Military has been delegated to personnel that will handle ALL communication with the Military Funeral Honor (MFH) Commands in NJ.  Please do not call ANY Military folks about bugling.  If your interested in becoming  certified by the Military’s Ap3 program.  Contact the State Director on our Contact Page.

Press/Media

If approached by the press, refer them to our State Director.  You may be invited to participate, but all interviews are coordinated by the State Director.

Digital Bugles

While live bugle is strongly prefered, a digital is a viable backup if no live bugle is available.  Do not make any negative comments to anyone regarding use of the electronic bugle.  If you are ever rejected at the cemetery because of a Digital Bugle, call the State Director for immediate assistance.
